Data Loss Prevention (DLP)
Illumant’s team of experts has deep experience in selecting, planning, and implementing end-to-end Data Loss Prevention (DLP) systems. Based on your needs, Illumant will enable you to make strong and effective use of this emerging class of products to identify, monitor, and protect sensitive or at risk data. An effective DLP system will use deep content analysis, based on central policies, to protect you against accidental or intentional disclosure or data leakage through bad business processes. It will also “clamp down” on the endpoints. You can run DLP as a gateway to block undesirable traffic, or out-of-band in a monitoring state.
An effective DLP system will:
- Define Sensitive Data
- What kind of data is most sensitive to the business?
- What kind of breaches must be prevented?
- What policies need to be enforce?
- Identify Sensitive Data, including Data in Motion (DIM), Data at Rest (DAR) and Data in Use (DIU)
- Identify Presence and Motion of Sensitive Data
- Address Data-in-Motion, Data-at-Rest, Data-in-Use
- Identify broken business processes or malicious acts
- Enforce Control & Compliance
- Block leakage events, or Quarantine for Review
- Provide feedback to users that place data at risk
- Demonstrate continuous improvement over time
Most of these critical tasks will be efficiently handled by DLP appliances that will sit on your perimeter, analyzing all outbound network traffic. Because the system will set up “fingerprints” for sensitive data, documents, and databases, the appliances will catch even snippets or excerpts of these data if they are outbound. (In a way it will be like an intrusion detection system or intrusion prevention system turned inside out!)
To get the most our of a DLP solution it must integrated with other systems such as SSL/ICAP proxy and email encryption. Illumant's DataTight® Architecture integrates these systems and more. For more information on our holistic approach to data security and data loss prevention click here.
